How Many Bundles in a Square? — Roofing Math Explained

1 Square = 100 sq ft = 3 Bundles

This is the standard for both 3-tab and most architectural shingles.

A “square” is the roofing industry's unit of measurement. One square covers 100 square feet of roof area. Standard shingle bundles are packaged so that 3 bundles make up one square. Knowing this conversion is just the start of the order — accessories still have to be counted separately.

Waste Factors by Roof Complexity

Raw bundle counts aren't enough — you need to account for waste from cuts, valleys, and hips. Here's how much extra to order based on your roof's complexity:

Roof DifficultyWaste %Best For
simple10%Gable roofs, few penetrations, straight runs
medium15%Standard roofs, some valleys and dormers
complex20%Hip roofs, skylights, multiple valleys and angles

Why waste factors matter: Every roof has cuts, overlaps, and unusable offcuts. A simple roof wastes about 10% of material. Add valleys, hips, or skylights and that number climbs to 15–20%. Underestimating waste is the #1 reason contractors make extra trips to the supply house mid-job.

Our calculator applies the waste factor automatically so the material quantities you see already include the extra you need. No mental math, no surprises on the roof.

Bundle Math Breakdown

Here's how to go from roof area to bundle count step by step:

  1. Measure your roof area in square feet (or use the horizontal footprint and multiply by your pitch factor).
  2. Add your waste factor — multiply the area by 1.10 (simple), 1.15 (standard roof), or 1.20 (complex roof).
  3. Divide by 100 to get the number of squares.
  4. Multiply by 3 to get the number of bundles.
  5. Round up — you can't buy a partial bundle.

Example:

Roof area = 2,400 sq ft, standard roof difficulty (15% waste)

Total area = 2,400 × 1.15 = 2,760 sq ft

Squares = 2,760 ÷ 100 = 27.6 squares

Bundles = 27.6 × 3 = 82.8 → round up = 83 bundles

Shingle Coverage Rates

Shingle TypeBundles / SquareCoverage / Bundle
3-Tab Shingles3~33.3 sq ft
Architectural Shingles3~33.3 sq ft
Premium / Designer4–5~20–25 sq ft

Most standard 3-tab and architectural shingles follow the 3-bundles-per-square rule. Premium or designer shingles are heavier and may require 4 or 5 bundles per square — always check the manufacturer's specs.

When to use the roof pitch calculator first

If you only have plan area, tax-record square footage, or a satellite footprint, run that number through the roof pitch calculator before you estimate bundles. Bundle math works best once you are starting from actual roof area.

Ordering Tips

  • Always round up to the next full bundle — suppliers don't split bundles.
  • Order an extra bundle or two for repairs and future patch work.
  • Match the lot number across all bundles to avoid color variation.
  • Don't forget accessories: starter shingles, ridge caps, nails, underlayment, and drip edge.
  • Most suppliers will take back unopened bundles — over-ordering by 5% is safer than a second trip.
